The ”actinic march”– how to choose wisely in the management of actinic keratosis, Bowen’s Disease and SCC
7 – 8 April 2025
Early detection and effective delivery of care for keratinocyte skin cancer (KSC) are essential but challenging, in the face of likely yearly increases in skin cancer incidences for the foreseeable future. We must conduct primary skin cancer prevention in a relevant and efficient fashion and at the same time organize our health care structure and delivery, choosing wisely in terms of accessible, geographically equal, evidence-based and effective health care components. Svenska Dermato-Epidemiologiska Nätverket (SveDEN), Svenska Sällskapet för Dermatologisk Kirurgi och Onkologi (SDKO) and the Department of Dermatology Linköping invite you to a two-day, Vadstena format meeting which will address current and developing issues in KSC.
The “Vadstena 4” meeting which will be open to all interested participants, will be held in English to facilitate participation of international experts.
The program will focus on issues around the disease spectrum from actinic keratosis to in-situ squamous cell neoplasia to invasive squamous cell cancer. We will set the meeting against a backdrop of the principles of the “Choosing Wisely” approach to health care organization and delivery. Senior Consultant Stella Cizinsky, Department of Cardiology and Physiology, Örebro University will present this approach for us and direct us to key points which we should bear in mind as we cover in more detail KSC and its health care delivery.
During the meeting, we will address possible aspects of our present approach to health care delivery that might not be optimal as well as the division of labour between different parts of our health care system.
The main speakers for the workshop will be Professor David Whiteman from QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute in Queensland, Australia, and Associate Professor Marlies Wakkee from Erasmus MC, Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Both are acknowledged international experts in their specific areas of research and in broader aspects of keratinocyte skin cancer. They will be supported by contributions from conference participants to cover areas such as the role of sunlight; our individual skin; the actual size and nature of the skin cancer problem in Sweden; tools for statistics and register study; prevention and early detection as well as health economic aspects.
We look forward to fruitful interaction between the attendees and our experts and will reserve time in the program for presentation and discussion of issues of special interest raised by participants.
Should participants wish to arrange meetings in smaller groups, modification of travel plans for early arrival or late departure can be accommodated.
